Pattern Review – Ric Rac Hat

Do you follow a lot of crochet designers?  I do!  I am lucky to have made some awesome friends in this business, and I love following all of them.  Every designer brings something unique to the table, and seeing all of the creativity (from designers AND their fans) is so amazing!

One of my favorite designers is Alessandra Hayden from Just Be Happy Crochet.  Her work is just fabulous.  Her tapestry crochet designs are so colorful and creative.  And her hats!!  Oh, how I love all of the hat patterns she creates!

Right now I am in love with the new Ric Rac Hat.  The texture of the hat – from the ribbing of the band through the body – is so much fun.  I just had to try it out for myself!

First, I gathered my supplies.  The pattern calls for worsted weight yarn – I chose to use new Touch of Alpaca yarn from Lion Brand in Blush.  (BTW, this yarn is so soft!!)  The suggested hooks are a G (4.0mm) and an I (5.5mm), but Alessandra says that you might want to go up hook sizes for the hat band if you crochet tightly.  So I grabbed a few other hooks, too.  Needles, scissors, and a pompom are the other supplies needed to create this hat.  (I buy my pompoms on Amazon.)

The pattern for this hat is simple, clear, and easy-to-follow.  The video tutorial is perfect!  I was able to whip this hat up in just a few hours.  I did go up a hook size for the hat band – I didn’t want it to be too tight. The great thing about the way Alessandra designs the ribbing for her hats is that they end up so stretchy!  It almost looks like it’s knit!

Because I went up a hook size for the hat band, I went up a hook size for the body of the hat.  I also added a few extra rounds to make it just a little slouchy.  Isn’t this texture gorgeous?  The zig zag of the pattern is created by working back and forth in rows, using simple stitches (dc and trc).  Even with this yarn being slightly fuzzy, you can still see the pattern.

So, what do you think of my Ric Rac Hat?  Do you love it as much as I do?  I am just so pleased with how this hat turned out!  The only problem I had was trying to figure out which color of pompom I liked best!  I had so much fun making my Ric Rac Hat – you will, too!
